Valley Arts and Entertainment presents its 3rd Annual Alabama Women in Jazz Festival Saturday, August 5, 2017. Your musical taste buds will be tantalized by top-tier female musicians at Insanity Entertainment Complex, 100 Skate Park, Madison, AL. The festival will start at 1 p.m. with a short documentary about the History of Women in Jazz, followed by an exciting day of music performances, vendors, foods and activities for the kids. So you think you can Dance! You will be up on your feet with the high-energy sounds of BJ Miller, a keyboardist and trombone jazz and blues musician. She’s a Kansas City native, but calls Alabama home now. For smooth jazz lovers! Paula Atherton is a terrific sax player/vocalist, songwriter and flutist who recently performed with Grammy award winning singer Dee Dee Bridgewater at the Annenberg Theater in Palm Springs, will be here to give you a little jazz funk backed by one of our own local bands. As you know, Freda is a Detroit native who realized her talents at an early age of twelve and that makes her a great headline for our program because she understands the importance of youth in music and the great heights that can be reached. Freda has musical theatre and acting background with such film credits as The Book of Numbers, Rag Doll, Spring, Nutty Professor the Klumps, Cordially Invited, Rhapsody, and the Divorce. This year marks Ella Fitzgerald's 100th year anniversary, in which Freda is touring to her "Tribute to Ella", which encompasses personal stories and some of her most memorable songs.
